    Offers resources for information, research, entertainment and life skills for people with disabilities. Internet home site for Abilities magazine, Canada’s foremost cross-disability lifestyle magazine.

  • Woodbine House:
    Publishers of books about special needs. Available-for-purchase books cover a wide spectrum of related topics.

  • AAMR: Disability BooksOnline:
    Compendium of books, both electronic format and print, available for purchase. Topics relate to developmental disabilities and are published by AAMR Publishing.

  • Disability Solutions:
    Newsletter resource for families and those interested in Down syndrome and related disabilities. Print and email subscriptions are available free of charge for those with a U.S. postal address. Outside the U.S., access to the online version is available free of charge three weeks after publication.

  • Down Syndrome Quarterly:
    Includes current research information, healthcare topics, editorial and commentary, and book reviews. Paid subscription required.

  • Special Child Magazine:
    Online magazine for parents and caregivers of children with special needs.

AUTISM

  • Geneva Centre for Autism:
    Leading source of training, resources and support for individuals with Autism and Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD) and their communities.

  • Autism Society of America:
    Promoting lifelong access and opportunity for all individuals and their families within the autism spectrum. Focus on providing information and education to help in decision-making through education, advocacy, public awareness and the promotion of research.

  • Centre for the Study of Autism:
    Provides information to parents and professionals about autism and conducts research into the efficacy of various therapeutic interventions. Based in Portland, Oregon.

  • Autism Research Institute:
    Non-profit organization devoted to conducting research on the causes of autism, and on methods of preventing, diagnosing and treating autism.

DOWN SYNDROME

  • Down Syndrome Research Foundation:
    Based in the U.K., but reaching across Canada through the Internet, The DSRF has a mandate to empower people with Down Syndrome to achieve their potential, lead independent and fulfilled lives and participate fully in the communities in which they live.

  • Canadian Down Syndrome Society (CDSS):
    Mission is to enhance the quality of life for all individuals with Down syndrome through information provision and assistance, networking opportunities for parents and professionals and advocacy in the areas of education, employment and health care.

  • National Down Syndrome Congress:
    Mission is to be the national advocacy organization for Down syndrome in the U.S., and functions as a major source of support and empowerment to persons with Down syndrome and their families.

  • National Down Syndrome Society:
    Based in New York City, the NDSS envisions a world where every person with Down syndrome has the opportunity to realise their life aspirations and has a focus on education, research and advocacy.

  • Down Syndrome WWW Page:
    Established in 1995 when the Internet was in its infancy, this page is still compiled from the contributions of members of the Down Syndrome Listserv and others. Links to a wide variety of information relating to Down syndrome.

  • Riverbend Down Syndrome Parent Support Group:
    Includes current research information, healthcare topics, editorial and commentary, and book reviews. Courtesy of the non-profit Riverbend Down Syndrome Parent Support Group.

EPILEPSY

  • Epilepsy Ontario:
    Information about epilepsy, including seizures, medications, first aid, and a resource centre. Additional internet links are also provided.

  • Edmonton Epilepsy Association:
    Objective is to promote an improved quality of life for people with epilepsy, through programs that include assistance and support, education, fund raising, recreation and research.

FRAGILE X SYNDROME

  • National Fragile X Foundation:
    Unites the Fragile X community while enriching lives through educational and emotional support. Working to advance research toward improved treatments and a cure for fragile X syndrome.

  • Conquer Fragile X Foundation:
    Information about fragile X with a focus on the development of effective treatments.

  • FRAXA Research Foundation:
    Supporting scientific research aimed at finding a treatment and cure for fragile X syndrome. Provides grants to universities worldwide.
